BRIEF HISTORY

The Ghana Poultry Network (GAPNET) started operations as in 1997. GAPNET collaborated with the Italian non-governmental organization Ricerca and Cooperazione in starting small commercial layers and cockerels programme with two women in the Afram Plains District. GAPNET provided technical services to these women. In 2000, Akunzule convened meetings of GAPNET with other non-governmental organizations in Accra.

In November 2001, GAPNET was inaugurated in Donkokrom after it had its first district workshop for women in rural poultry. Present at the inauguration was Mogens Madsen, a representative of the Danish Network for Smallholder Poultry Development. The Danish Network for Smallholder Poultry Network and Sankofa Foundation in the Netherlands are the main partners of GAPNET.

In March 2002, GAPNET formed its Executive Council, which meets to take key decisions in the running of the organisation.
